Prior to any contact with western society, the Native Americans had "third-gender" roles. "Berdaches" was a common derogatory term for people that were born males that assumed female roles.
Lucy Ann Lobdell (born 1829) lived as a man under the name Joseph Lobdell for 36 years, and even married a woman.
During the '50s and '60s, the first transgender organizations and publications were starting to appear, although law and medicine did not respond favorably to the growing awareness of the Transgendered people.
