Dispute with a friend

So one night when I was drunk, I some how damaged my friends chair. When someone else sat in it the next day it gave way/broke. He claims that chair is worth $60 when it clearly isn't He asked that I repay the price of the chair fully or else he's gunna make a big deal of it. I don't think it's fair seeing as there is real proof that I broke the chair and it wasn't the me who actually broke it. The reason I'm pissed off is that I'm trying to save money for a laptop for school and my friend knows this. I've done a lot for this kid in that past and the fact that he'd try to pull this shit really upsets me. I can do one of two things; repay the cost of the chair fully and try to move on; or play video survallence of him shoplifting at my family's business which could get him charged and fired. The second decision would clearly ruin the friendship but I really don't care anymore -_- What should I do :/

You should go find the real price of the $10 chair, and just buy the chair?

Buy the chair yourself. Leave it at his doorstep or something. Leave. Let it be. If he continues to shoplift, use that against him or else he won't stop.

Thank you all for your feedback on this topic, I really appreciate you guys taking the the time to read this all. Writing this out and reading the replies really makes me realize that it is indeed time to end a long friendship.
