When BG first started writing OS he made a simple one, and sold it to IBM on the terms that every sale IBM got, he would receive a profit no matter what. Apple (formerly known as something else back then, I can't remember off hand) bought a copy of this OS from IBM, so now every-time Apple make a sale, they have to give money to BG because Mac = basically BG's OS.
