Concept of referrals?

Can somebody tell me what the point of a referral is for this site?

I know for PTC sites they are very important, but how do referrals benefit you in these forums.

Just shows you are supportive to the forum i guess.

For some contests you need to get a certain amount of referrals and that will help keep track of your referrals.

Also it shows your support for the site.

It gets the site more members and at the same time shows that it was you that got the person to join.
