I feel like if they were to impersonate a well knowing member a lot of people have links to them so it gets uncovered severely fast. 

If someone uncovered someone with a small amount of posts and intermediate rep no one would expect them to be impersonated so straight away assume its the real deal then a scam unfolds.
 

Why would anyone even end up going first to someone like that is what I'm wondering

I believe they target vulnerable new members. They believe anything over +20 rep means they must have done solid successful deals, it's a cruel world these days lol
