Cats Going outside or staying inside?

Im about to get my first kitten in a month and i want to know what are the benefits letting it outside for hours when its older and should i do it. i hear a lot of stories about cats getting hit and getting in fights and getting killed by abusive people and overall lost. i know cats are smart and are very good at finding there way around places but i'm still a little worried what could happen.
