EDIT: Life is not perfect, sometimes we fail miserably and sometimes we succeed greatly. But, the good thing is we can learn from our mistakes. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird she demonstrates that life lessons can be taught through books, movies, and people. These lessons can teach us how to be a better person and live a better life with others. The main three lessons in to kill a mockingbird are positive even in tragedy, Respect others, and lastly to see things from other peoples perspective.

Harper Lee shows us that we should feel positive even in tragedy. Miss Maudie a very good example of this lesson goes through a big roadblock in the story. Miss Maudie’s house is on fire one evening and there’s no way of stopping it but just to watch.  The exact words she says are “why I hated that old cow barn, thought of setting’ fire to it a hundred times myself.” Her house is pretty much all she has and instead of being mad she is positive about it because she has a chance to build a small new one.  Most of the time losing something or would make someone very depressed and sad. But feeling sad and depressed would help you move on and accept what just happened. That’s why you should be positive and think on it like you have a chance to start something new and fresh.

Respect: a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. One of the overall main lessons in to kill a mockingbird, this lesson is taught mostly from Atticus the father of Jem and Scout. One major example of Respect that Atticus shows is defending Tom Robinson in his court Case. Tom Robinson is one of the few Blacks in the city of Maycomb and has been accused of raping a white man’s daughter. Atticus fights in this hopeless battle to try to free Tom from the grip of Racism. Eventually it doesn’t work out and Tom is accused and sent to jail. But from doing this and standing up for a black he got a tremendous amount of respect from the black community and was able to teach his kid a very good lesson respect everyone no matter what skin color they are.

Lastly one of the most important lessons in TKAM is to see things from other people’s perspectives. A main example of this lesson is Mrs. Dubose, as a recovering drug addict she is grumpy, mean, and yells a lot. But from the kids point of view they can’t see her background only her actions so she’s a mean old lady. One day Jem and Scout were walking by Mrs. Debose’s house when she starts to holler at them like normally saying things like “your daddy is a black-Lover”. So one night Scout and Jem decide to go to her garden and decide to cut all the blossoms off her flowers. Doing that later involved consequences such as Atticus making Scout and Jem go to Mrs. Dubose’s house 6 times each week and read to her for at least 2 hours. This most likely wouldn’t’ve happened if they knew beforehand that Mrs. Dubose was trying to quit drugs.

To Kill a Mockingbird has many life lessons other than the ones I just listed. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird she demonstrates that life lessons can be taught through books, movies, and people. This book has also won the Pulitzer Prize which is for the top Literature in the United States. The themes and Lessons in this book if you pay attention and use them in your daily life will make you mature and become a greater person in life.
