What's the point of them? You're birthday is the same as every other day of your life just that everyone says "Happy birthday to you".

Eh, the only one I really get is funerals and marriage.
 
Birthday is the day you were born. Which is supposed to be an important day for you.
Christmas is a time for cherishing family. Presents is just another way to show appreciation.
 
Okay let's go off funerals for example, some people mourn that person every year, they might leave things that person treasured by the grave.
A birthday is like a hyped up version of that, it has grown to be bigger than it really needs to be through time, the same with celebrations.
Birthdays might have started with receiving a treasured gift, then into the world came "spoiled kids", where one gift was not enough, thus how it's grown.

If you notice certain birthdays are celebrated more then others. Ex. the 18th and 21th are very popular since you gain new rights, becoming an adult and drinking (in the USA). At younger ages your celebrating becoming a year older. Have you noticed how young children like to say that now they are a big kid and the previous year they were a child. A birthday represents the coming of something or getting closer to something. As you get older you only get closer to death. Thats why you don't see seniors making a big deal over their birthdays, some are even saddened by it.

Celebrating holidays like Christmas is mainly to keep younger children happy and provide a time for family bonding. Sometimes its even to promote a certain idea of belief. As time passes we stop celebrating the real meaning of a holiday and hall mark it.

Because certain birthdays are time shorting until you get new freedoms or rights. If I was to put a controlled group onto an island and never introduce the idea of rights, freedoms, limits, and was to inform them of said birthdays they wouldn't celebrate.

Now the idea of death may seem scary to you and I because we are young but some times people are just waiting for death. Thats why an extreme elder may not be saddened by a birthday but a middle aged man who has not accepted will still be in sorrow.

Death = scary? Now, I'm no emo thingy but whatever way I go in life I'll end up with: DEAD. No matter what path, I become a bank robber: DEAD, I become the worlds smartest person: Most likely dead (if I'm THAT smart I can keep myself alive for life )

and shit like that, I don't care about death, I just find it fucking wired why people celebrate shit like birthdays. Happens once a year per person, not even rare.
