May 17, 2011: Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?
Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense, orange clay called pygg. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became know as "pygg banks". When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a bank that resembled a pig. And it caught on!
Dang that is very interesting.. I thought it would've be A to be testing it.... Umm very interesting I will be looking forwards to these each week now.
Pretty cool thread and question. Try to make the questions as wild and interesting as possible so more people will look. This could become a regular thing if you did that.
OEM, have you ever heard of piggy banks? They're little banks where you store your coins in. Long ago, people used to save their money in jars made out of a clay called pygg, an English potter misunderstood and he thought people meant "pig" banks, so the name caught on. And today we call them "piggy" banks.
