  • May 17, 2011: Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?

Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense, orange clay called pygg. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became know as "pygg banks". When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a bank that resembled a pig. And it caught on!

Pretty cool thread and question. Try to make the questions as wild and interesting as possible so more people will look. This could become a regular thing if you did that.

I guessed B becuase that seemed like the most unlikely one. Also it seemed like the first .com would be better than abc123. lol

Why I had no idea. Thanks dude. That is actually pretty interesting. I would've never guessed that. lol

OEM, have you ever heard of piggy banks? They're little banks where you store your coins in. Long ago, people used to save their money in jars made out of a clay called pygg, an English potter misunderstood and he thought people meant "pig" banks, so the name caught on. And today we call them "piggy" banks.
