Rookie mistake.  However, don't be discouraged, many "noobs", like yourself, tend to believe the controller is of any use for playing xbox, just because they come together.  This simply isn't true.  The controller should stay in the box, TV off.  This is the most effective way to play xbox, i assure you.  Good luck!
 
@voices you made me buy ghost at RRP with the season pass and extra skins just to find only 2500 people play online.
