That's probably the best bet, using a proxy would hide your real IP but make him aware someone else has access to his account.

If you want to log in and see if it's made anything then there's no way around him noticing the different IP. If you feel he won't do anything with the account, wait awhile and take a gamble and log in once to grab his stuff.
